Slowly but surely, I am being let into the little secrets of the Kölsch way of life.
What do the people here do on a wintery and miserable Tuesday evening? Well, they do a lot of indoors activities, such as going to the Cologne Arena to watch a ice hockey match, as the Cologne Sharks (AKA Kölner Haie, AKA KEC) are playing home that night.
And why go to this match in particular? Because they are playing against their arch-enemy, the Düsseldorf Metro Stars (DEG), that there is a strong possibility that they will win, and therefore no one wants to lose an opportunity to humiliate the adversary.
And this is how myself, a few friends and over 17.000 Cologne city dwellers end up in a fairly packed venue to enjoy the show.

In the two-hour long match (3×20 minutes + stops + breaks), I get to get familiarized with some of the rules, like there will be six players at all times, counting the goalkeeper, unless one player is sent out for a two minutes penalty break.

But the main rule on our side is, make noise, sing choruses from all the main Carnival songs (mainly “Denn wenn et Trömmelche jeht”  and of course the ubiquitous “Viva Colonia”), which makes me wonder why I bother learning German at all, if in the end, I seem to be using more Kölsch language than anything else at times.
The hard core fans behind the goal posts are as organised as one can get, with songs, choreographies, always started by the East side and immediately relayed by the Western one.
And speaking of organisation, how about this great cup holder specially adapted for the drinks containers (with Pfand of course)?
Â
Another rule, as expected, is to show our discontent against the adversary, scanding “K-E-C, scheiße DEG”, with a total lack of impartiality, as the DEG actually pretty much dominate the first 20 minutes, ending with 0-1 against Cologne.
But the Sharks come back, ending the second part with a score of 2-1. As Cologne is dominating the third and last part by 3-1, the DEG get rid of their goal keeper to get more Düsseldorf players on the ice rink, which brings them nowhere as they do not manage to score, and to top it up, exactly 2 seconds before the final blow, the Cologne Sharks mark their fourth and final goal.

Final score: 4-1, two Kölsch, three Carnival songs, and a lot of fun.
